Sing Harmony in Perfect Pitch with Pitch Perfector!

To be able to sing harmony, you need to be familiar with the major and minor scales. A scale consists of eight (or an octave) of successive notes designated by the letters A to G. The C major scale consists of C (do) – D (re) – E (mi) – F (fa) – G (so) – A (la) – B (ti) – C (do).

The major scale consists of note intervals running whole-whole-half-whole-whole-whole-half while the note intervals in the minor scale run whole-half-whole-whole-half-whole-whole.

The notes in harmony are usually taken from the major scale.

Find Two Voices

As mentioned earlier, harmony is created by singing around the primary melody and pitch. In a two-voice harmony, one individual sings a note from the original melody. The second person then joins in singing the same note, but changes to a higher or lower pitch. These higher and lower notes can be determined by playing the corresponding chord on a piano or guitar.

This process is repeated at certain notes in the song, with the second voice singing at an interval higher or lower than the melody.

Making Harmony Work

Before you attempt to sing in harmony, you need to know the song very well. Some singing coaches recommend that each participant in a harmony learn the original melody as well as their own part.

While creating harmony takes a lot of work and practice, some talented individuals are capable of “on-the-fly” harmony, meaning they can easily jump into the melody and sing at a different pitch. Because of their finely tuned ears, they can readily identify the center pitch and melody and then create a second voce to accompany this primary melody.

Ear training lessons are an integral part of harmony skills. As an example, play a note on the piano and determine its pitch. Imagine yourself singing this note. Play the note again, but this time, sing along. On the third time, play the note, but sing a note higher or lower than the one you played on the piano.
