When choosing an online singing course, you should use the same criteria which you have set during your search for an in-person voice teacher. This would include determining your musical goals, such as the music style or genre you want to sing, if you’ll be using a microphone or not, or the venue where you will be singing (church, theater, bars or nightclubs).

As you surf the web, you will discover that there are a wide variety of online singing courses available. Your selection of a particular course will depend upon what aspect of singing you want to learn. There are comprehensive voice education courses that cover music history, music theory, and voice techniques. Other courses concentrate on the specifics of stage performance, like resonance and tone placement, developing stage presence, and emotional interpretation and expression of songs.

Your decision to use or not to use microphones and other electronic amplification devices also need to be considered. Some courses do not teach voice projection. If you are capable of projecting your singing voice without a microphone, it will only take you small adjustments to use one. However, if you cannot project without the use of a microphone, then you would need to learn voice projection in the event that the sound system breaks down.

Many of the good online courses are reasonably priced, costing nearly the same as ten to twelve lessons if they were to be conducted in your own home. While you may be tempted to skip the “boring” basics and jump ahead to the topics you are interested in, it must be pointed out that you will end up not getting the instruction that you truly need for your voice. If you want to get your money’s worth, study the course from beginning to end. Disciplined athletes know how vital the fundamentals are; the same is true for singing.

There is an advantage to online programs. Since you are practically on your own, there is very little pressure to meet deadlines and expectations. This is ideal for those who can work without supervision, and who would want to review things learned from previous lessons.

Some Disadvantages of Online Singing Lessons

However, it can be challenging if you run into problems and you don’t have the in-person support that you need. This is the advantage of having a voice teacher in person at your home supervising your lessons. He or she can give you other exercises if one doesn’t work for you. This kind of support cannot be achieved with online singing lessons.

Another disadvantage is that you don’t get feedback on your progress or if there are errors in your technique. Singers, unfortunately, could not do a self-evaluation. Since the ears are anatomically located near structures associated with voice production, you can only hear your voice as it is transmitted through the skull and sinuses, and not through the air as another person or a microphone would receive it.

To be able to hear yourself sing, you will need to record yourself and listen to the playback. Only this way can you make a comparison of your voice with the examples in the online lessons. But even this may prove difficult if you are not able to do an objective assessment of your own voice.
